What is AllStation Laboratory?

AllStation Laboratory is an independent research initiative building quantitative analyses to answer messy questions about the Indian environment, including infrastructure, energy, and urban systems. Each project combines a mathematical element with a clear question in order to make complex systems legible and actionable.

The work draws on applied mathematics, environmental studies, and systems thinking to explore questions like: What are the actual emissions impacts of transport electrification? Will India meet its renewable energy targets? How do infrastructure decisions shape urban outcomes?

The aim is to identify vague claims, opaque situations, and interesting contexts, frame them with a straightforward question, and use a mathematical tool to find a clear, actionable answer.

ASL emerged when Shaunak stumbled upon the Gehl People Urban Design Studio, and was then hit with the aim of building his own 'studio'. The idea was played with for a while, until the neat intersection between applied mathematics and environmental complex systems was deemed interesting — ultimately leading to AllStation Laboratory.

ASL operates as an open repository — all analysis, code, and findings are publicly accessible. The goal is not simply to answer questions, but to demonstrate that rigorous technical analysis can be done independently, clearly, and in service of an improved world. ASL does utilise AI for projects, but only as a mathematical reasoning and coding assistant. Manual oversight is maintained for the same. All written content and narrative is by the researcher. About Shaunak

Shaunak Joshi

AllStation Laboratory is founded and maintained by Shaunak Joshi, a final-year undergraduate student at FLAME University (attempts at) studying Applied Mathematics with a minor in Environmental Studies.

Shaunak's research background includes an internship at DIAT-DRDO, where he worked on aerodynamics problems and co-authored a paper for a conference at IIT Jodhpur. He has also worked at the WageIndicator Foundation for research, and has held leadership roles across academic and extracurricular contexts. His interests sit at the intersection of mathematical modeling, systems, and policy. Hence AllStation.

Alongside AllStation, Shaunak runs his own blog on Tumblr, reads a lot, and swims.
